Traffic lights proposed for Abermain intersection
Traffic lights are part of a slew of upgrades that have been proposed for a problematic Abermain intersection.
The lights would be installed on the intersection of Cessnock Road and Orange Street in an effort to improve safety, particularly for pedestrians and motorists turning right out of Orange Street.
Cessnock Road would also be widened to provide a right turn lane into Orange Street and a westbound through lane, and also at the nearby Charles Street intersection to allow for an extended left turn lane onto Cessnock Road and dedicated left and right turn lanes.
From 2012 to the end of 2017 there were 26 crashes recorded along the stretch between Elizabeth Street and Neath Road. 21 of the crashes resulted in injuries, while pedestrians were involved in another three.
14 car parks would be lost to allow for the Cessnock Road turning lane.
Any community feedback about the plans can be submitted to Roads and Maritime Services by March 1. The plans can be viewed at rms.nsw.gov.au/projects.
