Museum project for new hospital
Maitland City Council will partner with Health Infrastructure NSW and the Hunter New England Health District to deliver its Open Museums, Open Minds strategy in the new Maitland hospital.
The project will see a collection of artefacts from the current hospital used in a museum project at the new facility as part of a broader public art objective at the hospital.
Open Museums, Open Minds aims to document and display heritage items and items of interest from around the city. Historians Joe Eisenberg OAM and Dr Janis Wilton OAM have coordinated the strategy, and will also be involved in the hospital project.
The first of three project stages will begin in February and will assess the current collection of items and identify other interesting items that not held at the moment.
Community engagement will be undertaken in the second stage, which will also run through next year.
The project comes at no cost to Council, with Health Infrastructure NSW providing approximately $78,000 for the first two stages.
The final stage, which includes the implementation, will be costed when appropriate and will also be funded by the State Government.
