Maitland MP launches toy drive
Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison has called on the community to get behind Maitland Neighbourhood Centre’s Christmas Appeal by hosting a toy drive at her office.
Each year the centre distributes approximately 250 hampers to local families, which include gifts for children, festive food and pantry staples.
“Over a year, we may see anywhere from ten to fifteen thousand families through our services,” community worker Jenny Fullford said.
“People are really struggling just to put a roof over their head and keep their utilities connected, so to put food on their tables and a smile on their children’s faces is what we really aim to do through our hampers.
“It doesn’t take much to make a big difference.”
The centre is seeking gifts for all age groups, including teenagers, however they ask that the gifts are not wrapped.
Ms Aitchison has encouraged everyone to get behind the drive.
“The Christmas season can be particularly difficult for families in need, and especially on children who often go without,” she said.
“It’s nice to be able to reach out to children in our own backyard when for some children just a small donation can make a huge difference.
“Maitland is a generous and giving community, so let’s share that spirit with parents and children who need some extra help this Christmas.”
Donations can be taken to Ms Aitchison’s office, next to ANZ Bank in Elgin Street. Holiday Coast Credit Union (near Hit ‘n’ Dip at Green Hills) are also accepting donations, while Reading Cinemas are collecting on behalf of Carrie’s Place.
