Kurri scouts become Landcare warriors
12 enthusiastic Kurri Kurri Scouts have thrown up their hands to tackle a rehabilitation project in a local park.
The group of Junior Landcare Warriors contacted Cessnock City Council to offer their assistance, with Council offering up ‘The Mound’ area of Kurri Kurri’s Log of Knowledge Park.
‘The Mound’ is a raised area in the park which the Scouts will restore to its natural vegetation community and associated habitat values.
With assistance from Council’s Weeds Team they will remove several invasive species including Lantana, African Olive and Camphor Laurel, while the Parks Team will help the Scouts with illegally dumped rubbish and organic waste.
Once the weeds have been dealt with the Scouts will follow up with replanting in early Autumn or Winter, placing specially built nest boxes within the area to encourage native fauna to return.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said the Scouts’ determination was wonderful to witness.
“It’s great to see young people who are enthusiastic about their local environment and I look forward to following the Warriors as they carry out this project.”
