Human rights champion to speak
Former President of the Australian Human Rights Commission Gillian Triggs will appear in Maitland on Thursday night.
Professor Triggs served as the commission’s president from 2012 to 2017, where she received considerable media and political pressure from both an inquiry into children in immigration detention and how the commission handled racial discrimination cases.
Her memoir Speaking Up has recently been published and tackles the need for a fairer world and the responsibilities Australians have to ensure institutions and systems are equitable.
She will appear as part of Maitland City Library’s Look Who’s Talking program.
“Gillian Triggs is a strong and courageous woman, a true human rights champion,” City Librarian Keryl Collard said.
“Join us for a fascinating insight into her tenure as the Australian Human Rights Commissioner and her views on the human rights challenges facing Australians in the 21st century.”
The event begins at 6pm on Thursday, November 1 at Maitland Town Hall. Bookings can be made at maitlandlibrary.com.au or by calling 4933 6952.
