Critical incident launched after Cessnock crash
A critical incident investigation has been launched following a fatal single-vehicle crash at Cessnock this afternoon.
Officers from the Hunter Valley Police District were making inquires to locate a 60-year-old man on Thursday.
At around midday it is believed that the man, driving a Nissan Navara, saw police on Richmond Vale Road and drove off at speed before hitting a tree.
Officers performed CPR on the man until the arrival of paramedics, but he died at the scene.
There was no one else in the vehicle.
A crime scene was established and will be forensically examined by Crash Investigation Unit officers, while Newcastle City Police District officers will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
That investigation will be subject to an independent review and will also be monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
