Bubs turn pink for breast cancer awareness
Some of Maitland’s youngest have joined in the fundraising for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the most delicious way.
In recognition of this month’s awareness and fundraising drive, this week Mums & Bubs Maitland hosted a pink bake sale and guest talk by Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation community speaker Yela Wilson.
It is estimated that 1 in 8 Hunter women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, with around 600 new cases every year.
With the likelihood high that several of the mums at Monday’s event would be diagnosed in the future, Ms Wilson said that it was important to keep the disease awareness current.
“That’s why these events are so important for us,” Ms Wilson said.
“A lot of it is talking about prevention and awareness, and being body aware.
“You know your body better than anyone else.”
Although the kids were slightly more interested in the sugar hit than the cause, the bake sale raised almost $200 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The treats were donated by local cake makers.
