Bonjour to Maitland’s newest cinema
BYO popcorn and chair – a pop-up cinema is bringing foreign films to Maitland’s doorstep in a city first.
This week The Levee’s Riverlink Building will host an outdoor cinema for a series of free Foreign Film Nights, offering locals a film experience that often only be found in Newcastle and Sydney.
Films from Iceland, France and Sweden will be shown, bringing to close The Levee’s spring activity theme of ‘Going Global’ which has included drumming and kite-making workshops, and October’s Riverlights festival.
“We were looking for something a bit different,” Maitland City Council’s Visitor Economy coordinator Martin Payne said.
“What better way to end that theme than with a foreign film festival?”
On Thursday the Icelandic film Rams (rated M) will be screened. It won the 2015 Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, telling the story of two sheep farming brothers who are estranged despite living on neighbouring farms. They must work together when their way of life is threatened by a fatal ovine disease.
Friday’s film will be Rosalie Blum (M) from France. It is a comedy based on series of graphic novels about a man who has a sudden connection with a grocery store worker, and embarks on mission to discover why.
2017 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner The Square (MA 15+) will be shown on Saturday. The Swedish comedy tackles freedom of expression and political correctness when a gallery curator with personal issues gets caught up in controversial video that has been produced to promote an art installation.
Mr Payne said the films were chosen in consultation with the library, offering something to complement the city’s nighttime economy and something different for people who aren’t interested in the usual family-friendly activities.
“It’s a bit of a test case for Maitland,” he said.
“We’re interested to see how it will work in this space.”
The films will be screened on November 8, 9, 10 from 7pm. The events are free, however attendees will be required to bring their own chair. For more information visit theleveemaitland.com.au.
